Help answer the question about car battery replacement

How much should a car window motor and battery replacement and tire rotation cost for 98 Honda CRV?
Let’s just say AVERAGE.

I just took my car in because I needed some things fixed.

The window motor on the front driver’s side needed to be replaced and installed. A new battery had to be replaced and installed. Also, the tires were rotated.

How much should all of that cost on average?

I paid 450. Was I ripped off?

It's unlikely you have three terminals coming out of your battery. You should have a black and red wire. The black is negative, the red is positive. In some cases, there are two batteries linked in series, but the pair still connects to the UPS with two wires.

You can extend the wires out and attach them to any battery. Be careful to tape or otherwise cover the terminals, because an accidental short of a big battery can be very dangerous. Also be aware that car batteries are wet cells, and dangerous acid can leak out if it tips or cracks. You can get a plastic battery box at any autoparts store for safety.

The only real downside is that when the battery begins to die, it often gets hot. Your UPS probably has a circuit that will turn off the charger if the temperature rises. So it's important to change the battery every three or four years to prevent a dangerous overheating condition.

One more thing…once you do this, you will no longer have a UL approved UPS. If you create a hazardous condition or cause fire or electrocution, it's totally your responsibility.

What type of a car do you have?

In most new cars (if not all), the ignition has three settings: off, power on (but engine off), power+engine on.

Listen to the radio in the power on option.

Each car radio has also the option to get constant power (even if ignition is OFF) so that the memory settings don't go away (radio stations, etc.).

When you spilled some of the liquid you actually spilled hydrochloric acid. If the battery were to loose liquid from use then distilled water is the correct thing to do. You should have filled it with battery acid. I think that you damaged the new battery reducing its CCA. It also sounds like you need new brushes for your alternator. When the brushes reach the end of their life the alternator will perform poorly and possibly even intermittently.

You can fix the battery by draining and refilling, but good luck with disposal of the old acid. The alternator will need to be load tested and repair/replaced if it does not pass the test.

    Good luck.

I feel that you are blaming the alternator and it's not at fault. When you installed that weak worn out battery into your car it does not sound like you gave it much time to charge up. When you left the car idling the battery discharged what you had managed to get into it. Remember that at idle the alternator does not put out maximum voltage and probably not enough in the discharged state that the battery was.

Because this is a capitalistic society. The board of directors must answer to the shareholders and show a profit if not they will be voted out of a job. Since it costs hundreds of millions of dollars to develop a new product and that's building off existing platforms, an EV is quite different. There is no magic machine that craps out parts, thousands of man hours must be invested in "Tooling" cost at both the assembly plant as well as all vendors, so add another couple hundred million to initial assembly cost. Where are we now , close to half a billion and not one production vehicle has been built yet, no exec would risk that amount of money on a car that may only sell a few thousand units. Plus the long term cost of warranty and parts on a looser line. No long before it would leave the R & D lab it's shown at SEMA and all the other big car shows, select people get to test drive them, extensive surveys are done to see how many people would actually buy them, what would the profit margin be, what are customer concerns, etc etc. Gm and Chrysler got into trouble when they had everything bet on big gas gusslers and the market suddenly turned to fuel efficient cars and they had none to offer, now most of the board has been replaced. Ford at least had a couple of models which is what saved them.

    Who killed they electric car, it wasn't detroit or oil it was the American consumer with comments like;
I wouldn't be caught dead in something that ugly.
    The range is to short.
    I like loud exhust.
    it's too slow.
If I'm on a trip where do I recharge it?
What if it breaks down? Who will fix it?
It's just not practical for me, while I don't drive more than 20 miles a day now I might want to in the future and then what?

Nothing much will happen in this economy however as it bounces back then expect the gas prices to jump back to $4 a gallon and higher, then a lot if not most people will want one plus at that point it will be profitable for gas stations and parking lots to install chargers. Liquid cooled NiMH's and Li's can be Pulse charged in less than 5 minutes. Also Chevron and ECD's cobasys patents only cover large format nimh batteries and not coupled arrays which have been proven superior.

PS. current batteries last in excess of 100,000 miles and cost less than half of what is spent in the same time frame on all the other parts associated with an ICE vehicle.
If mass produced an EV would be much cheaper than an ICE, remember tooling cost , if costs total $1,000,000 and I plan on selling 10 units then each must sell for more than 100,000 if I want to stay in business, but if I make 1000 units then each can sell for only 1000 minimum. And the Tesla costs what it does because, they don't make that many of them and it's actually a Lotas Elise with all ICE removed and their own trim package added so add the cost of the lotus chassis plus $20k per unit liscensing fee.
And of course, well it will still be powered by a coal fired plant and thats not very green, even though only half of US's power comes from coal and ALL of the plants have extensive scubbers, bag houses, and other various enviromental controls and if the Cap and Trades are passed Carbon Sequestering stages. Some coal plants like Sammis in south east ohio have already added it at a cost of 1.8 billion

I think it is wonderful that you want to start a club that would benefit many underprivileged children in Mexico.

    1. Since I don't live in Mexico, I'll have to send everything I collect here by Fed Ex/UPS, right? Or would it be better to send money and buy things over there??

I think it would be better to send the donations by Fed Ex or UPS and have your adviser collect them.

    2. Should I have a family member be an "adviser" to the club in Mexico so that they could collect a "registry" of needy children and actually give things out to them??

Yes, you should have someone you trust to be an adviser to the club so that you can be sure that the donations are actually going to the children.

    3. What would be a good name for the club that would appeal to all kinds of students?

You can give it a nice Spanish name like "Esperanza" You are giving hope to these children.

    4. In what way should I collect presents, clothing, etc. for those children in Mexico?

You can create a website about this club, providing information that would encourage people to want to help and have them donate via PayPal, you can do some fundraising; you can have an event and admission to get in would be presents, clothing, etc. See if there are any stores like Walmart, K-Mart who would be willing to donate clothing. If you go to church, encourage members to donate these things.

    5. Any other tips?

When your club is up and running, you can plan trips to Mexico and meet the children whom you have blessed. Also, take pictures and post them on your website so that the donors can see that their contributions have made a difference in the lives of many children. On your website, you can even encourage people to sponsor a child and they can send that child gifts, clothing, help with other areas of their lives.

I wish you all the best on this wonderful venture of yours. Please let me know how it goes.

"converting 12 volts to 24 volts without substantial power loss?"

You don't get something for nothing. Yes, you could use a DC-DC converter, which would weigh a few pounds, but you would convert 12 volts at (eg) 10 amps to 24 volts at 5 amps, minus about 20 %, or 4 amps.

You need to go thru the numbers. Check the weight and power output of the Li-ion batteries, then check a 12v lead-acid with converter, then other alternatives. Calculate watt-hours per pound for each.

You can get watt-hours from amp-hours by multiplying it by the battery voltage. watt-hours is a unit of energy.
