If you know what car you would like to buy, you can ask the dealer what they are offering but generally, your credit union will offer one of the best rates available.

Good luck.

If you're planning on buying between now and the end of September, the car manufacturer's lender, such as GMAC or Ford Motor Credit, have the very best rates now .. if you qualify for them. Many models have 0% APR for up to 60 months. No bank or credit union will be close to that.

The key is qualifying. What is your credit history like? Have you previously financed a car? If so, did you make every payment on time? Any late pays will hurt you. As will no car finance history. Have you made all your credit card payments on time? What about your rent or mortgage payments? Secured or unsecured loans? Are you at your credit limits on your credit cards? (too bad) Or are you at 30% or less of your credit limit? (excellent)

Do you have any charge-offs or 60 or 90 day late pays? Repos? Tax liens? Behind on child support? Those are the kiss of death.

If you're strong enough, go through the manufacturer's lending company. If not, you need to shop around to find your best rate. It will vary greatly depending on your credit history.
